Crafting an Editorial World

Building coherence across objects, typography, photography and print.

An editorial world is more than a magazine layout. It is the agreement between paper, type, photographs and the objects that appear in them.

Start with the paper

I choose paper early, often before the first shoot. Uncoated stock absorbs colour and softens contrast, so lighting and grading are planned with it in mind.

Objects carry meaning

Props are never neutral. Every object in a frame either supports the story or distracts from it, so the prop list gets as much attention as the casting.

  • Paper and print tests before shooting
  • One typeface family per issue
  • A shared colour reference for photographers and printers
